Xylena and the Hiding Colors

Kids stories

On a warm Island, shy Xylena the mermaid helps the Crystal Guardian find the missing colors. With a soft song and gentle courage, she brings the Island’s sparkle back—and earns a chest of rainbow pearls.
Xylena and the Hiding Colors

Xylena the mermaid lived by a warm Island. The sand was soft. The sea was blue. Xylena was shy, but very kind. She loved to help.

One morning, Xylena saw something strange. The Island flowers looked pale. Even the shells looked dull.

“Oh no,” whispered Xylena. “Where did the colors go?”

A bright figure rose from the water. It was the Crystal Guardian. He was tall and shiny, like clear ice, but friendly. He spoke in a gentle, bell-like voice.

“I guard the Island’s sparkle,” he said. “The colors are hiding. They are scared.”

“Scared?” Xylena blinked.

The Crystal Guardian nodded. “A big cloud covered the sun last night. It was loud. Now the colors peek out only a little.”

Xylena felt a tiny wobble in her tummy. New things made her nervous. But she took a deep breath.

“I will find them,” she said, softly but brave.

The Crystal Guardian smiled. “We will do it together.”

They swam to a quiet cove. The water there was glassy. Xylena called, “Hello, colors! It’s safe!”

Nothing.

The Crystal Guardian tapped a crystal rock. Ting! Ting! “Listen,” he said. “Soft sounds.”

Xylena tried. She sang a small song: “La la, sea so blue.”

A tiny blue shimmer popped out from under a stone.

“Hi, Blue,” Xylena giggled. “Come with me.”

They swam to the beach. Xylena looked under a leaf. “Yellow? Are you there?”

A little yellow glow hid inside a shell.

The Crystal Guardian whispered, “No rush. Slow is safe.”

Xylena nodded. “It’s okay, Yellow. I am gentle.”

Yellow came out, warm like sunshine.

Now they needed Green and Pink and Orange. They searched the Island edge. They peeked behind driftwood. They looked in tide pools.

Xylena saw a crab wearing seaweed like a hat.

“Excuse me, Mr. Crab,” Xylena said.

The crab waved both claws. “Snap-snap! I saw Pink go that way!”

“Thank you!” said Xylena.

They followed bubbles to a small cave. It was not dark, just quiet. Xylena held the Crystal Guardian’s hand. His hand felt cool and safe.

Inside, little colors huddled together like sleepy kittens.

Xylena sat down. “I was scared too,” she said. “But I can be brave with a friend.”

The colors wiggled.

The Crystal Guardian made a funny face. His shiny cheeks puffed up like a fish.

Xylena laughed. The colors laughed too, in tiny sparkles.

“Will you come out?” Xylena asked.

Blue, Yellow, Green, Pink, and Orange floated into her hands like soft lights.

“Let’s put you back,” said Xylena.

They swam around the Island. Xylena touched Blue to the sea—whoosh, the water turned bright. She touched Green to the palms—pop, the leaves glowed. She touched Yellow to the sand—shine! She touched Pink to the shells—pretty! She touched Orange to the sunset—wow!

The Island looked happy again.

The Crystal Guardian bowed. “You did it, Xylena. You were gentle and brave.”

Xylena’s eyes widened. “Did I really?”

“Yes,” he said. “And you earned a treasure.”

He lifted a small crystal chest from the water. Inside were rainbow pearls. They glimmered in every color.

“For you,” said the Crystal Guardian.

Xylena held the pearls close. They felt smooth and cool.

“Thank you,” she said.

That night, Xylena wore one rainbow pearl on a little string. She looked at the bright Island and smiled.

“Colors,” she whispered, “you can always come to me.”
