Sir William was a kind cowboy. He wore a soft hat. He had small boots that tap-tap on the floor.
He lived in a big House. Not a scary House. A cozy House.
One morning he said, “Where is my shiny star badge?”
He looked under the rug. No badge.
He looked on the chair. No badge.
He looked in his toy box. No badge.
Sir William felt a little sad. “I miss it,” he whispered.
Then a Ghost floated by. The Ghost was pale and gentle. It made a tiny “whooo,” like a silly wind.
“Hello, Cowboy,” said Ghost. “You look droopy.”
“My badge is lost,” said Sir William.
Ghost blinked. “We can find it! I am good at looking in quiet places.”
They went to the kitchen. Sir William opened a drawer. “Spoons!”
Ghost peeked in. “No badge.”
They went to the hallway. Sir William tapped his boots. “Tap-tap. Listen!”
Ghost giggled. “Your boots are loud.”
In the living room, a Professor sat at a desk. The Professor had big round glasses and a stiff collar. He was very serious.
“Shhh,” said the Professor. “I am doing important thinking.”
Sir William asked, “Professor, did you see my star badge?”
The Professor sniffed. “A badge can distract a cowboy from thinking. Maybe it should stay hidden.”
Ghost floated close and whispered, “That sounds unkind.”
Sir William stood tall. He was brave, but polite. “Professor, my badge helps me feel ready. Ready to help.”
The Professor frowned. “Hmph.”
Ghost had an idea. “Let us follow clues,” Ghost said. “I can smell shiny things.”
Ghost drifted near the window. “I smell shine!”
They went to the curtains. Sir William pulled them gently. “Hello, dust!”
No badge.
They went to the stairs. Ghost pointed. “I hear a little clink.”
Sir William listened. “Clink?”
At the top step was a tiny trail: three sparkles, like crumbs of light.
Sir William smiled. “Sparkles! We are close.”
They followed the sparkles into the bedroom. The room was warm. A pillow sat on the bed like a small hill.
Ghost circled the pillow. “Under!”
Sir William lifted the pillow. “There!”
The shiny star badge was hiding under it, safe and bright.
Sir William picked it up. “My badge!”
He put it on his vest. It glimmered.
The Professor appeared in the doorway. He looked surprised. “You found it.”
Sir William nodded. “Yes. And I did it with a friend.”
Ghost waved its floaty tail. “Teamwork!”
The Professor sighed. His face softened a little. “I hid it,” he admitted. “I wanted quiet. I did not think about your feelings.”
Sir William said, “Feelings matter. We can be quiet and kind.”
The Professor paused, then opened his hand. Inside was a small wooden box.
“For your help,” he said. “A treasure. I made it.”
Sir William opened the box. Inside was a new badge, even bigger, with a tiny bell.
“Jingle-jingle,” went the bell.
Ghost laughed. “Now we can always find you!”
Sir William laughed too. “Thank you, Professor.”
The Professor nodded. “Thank you for being brave and gentle.”
That night, Sir William hung both badges on a hook by the door. “Safe,” he said.
Ghost floated near the light. “Goodnight, Cowboy.”
“Goodnight, Ghost,” said Sir William.
In the cozy House, everything felt right. And the badges shone, bright and happy.
