Princess Violet and the Rainbow Shell

Kids stories

Princess Violet, a brave mermaid princess, and Princess Pearl search the Bubble Caves for the lost Rainbow Shell to bring bright colors back to their undersea Kingdom—while the Crystal Guardian watches closely.
Princess Violet and the Rainbow Shell

Princess Violet was a mermaid princess in a shiny Kingdom under the sea. She was gentle and brave. She liked to help.

One morning, the water looked gray. Not bright. Not happy.

Princess Violet swished her tail. “Oh no,” she said. “Our colors are sleepy.”

A second princess came to visit. Her name was Princess Pearl. She wore a small crown and carried a tiny shell bag. She was cheerful and curious.

Princess Pearl whispered, “I heard the Crystal Guardian is near the Coral Gate.”

“Who is that?” asked Violet.

“A big guardian made of crystal,” said Pearl. “It says: ‘No bright colors without a kind heart.’”

Violet blinked. “But we have kind hearts.”

Pearl giggled. “Then let’s show it!”

They swam through the Kingdom. Past soft sea grass. Past sleepy fish. Past a castle made of pale coral.

At the Coral Gate, something sparkled. A tall Crystal Guardian stood there. Its face was shiny and serious.

“Stop,” said the Crystal Guardian. “The colors are locked.”

Violet held Pearl’s fin. “Please,” Violet said. “We want our Kingdom bright again.”

The Crystal Guardian’s voice went tink-tink, like little bells. “Find the lost seashell. The Rainbow Shell. Bring it back.”

“A lost item!” said Pearl. “We can do that!”

Violet nodded. “We will try.”

They looked left. They looked right. They searched behind round rocks.

A crab waddled by.

“Hello, Crab,” said Violet. “Did you see a Rainbow Shell?”

The crab clicked. “Click-click. I saw something shiny near the Bubble Caves.”

“Thank you!” said Violet.

They swam to the Bubble Caves. Bubbles went pop-pop-pop.

Pearl laughed. “Tickly bubbles!”

Violet smiled, but she stayed focused. “We must be careful,” she said.

Inside the cave, it was a little dark. Violet felt a tiny worry.

Pearl whispered, “I’m right here.”

Violet took a deep breath. “I am brave,” she told herself.

They saw a glimmer under sand.

“Look!” said Pearl.

Violet brushed the sand with her hand. There it was: the Rainbow Shell. It had pink and blue and gold.

But the shell was stuck under a small stone.

Violet pushed. It did not move.

Pearl tried. “Hnnng!” Still stuck.

Violet thought. She was clever. She found a smooth seaweed ribbon.

“Let’s pull together,” said Violet.

She slid the seaweed under the stone. Pearl held one end. Violet held the other.

“One, two, three!” they said.

Pull!

The stone rolled away. The Rainbow Shell was free.

“Yay!” said Pearl.

Violet hugged the shell to her chest. “We did it.”

They swam back fast. The Crystal Guardian waited at the Coral Gate.

Violet held up the Rainbow Shell. “We found it,” she said.

The Crystal Guardian leaned close. Its eyes flashed.

“Tell me,” it said, “why did you help each other?”

Violet answered softly, “Because friends don’t leave friends.”

Pearl added, “And because working together is quicker!”

The Crystal Guardian paused. Then it smiled. The hard, serious face looked kind.

“Good,” it said. “The Kingdom may shine.”

It touched the Rainbow Shell.

Whoosh!

Color rushed through the water. Coral turned bright. Fish sparkled. The castle glowed.

Violet and Pearl twirled. “So pretty!” they cheered.

The Crystal Guardian opened its crystal hand. Inside was a treasure: two tiny crowns made of warm, glowing pearls.

“For brave, kind princesses,” it said.

Violet placed one crown on Pearl’s head. Pearl placed one on Violet’s head.

Violet whispered, “Thank you.”

Pearl giggled. “Now we are extra princess-y!”

They swam home through a bright, happy Kingdom, and the colors stayed wide awake.
